JAMES B. ATKINS, FAIA

Jim writes about the history of architects and architecture
From Frank Lloyd Wright to Filippo Brunelleschi, and from the ancient and magnificent gates of Seoul to the unruly and wonderful artistic extremes of Friedensreich Hundertwasser, Jim provides a perspective that excites as it enlightens.

His work comes from hands-on experience.
A third generation construction professional, he began as a subcontractor working his way through architecture school, and after graduation as a construction manager and general contractor constructing projects in the public and private sectors before joining the international architectural firm, HKS. He has been a licensed architect in twenty-two states and the District of Columbia, and as the creator and managing principal of the HKS construction services program, he was responsible for over $23 billion of construction in the US and many foreign countries.
He wrote a few things down along the way.
He has authored numerous industry articles, including in multiple editions of The Architect's Handbook of Professional Practice, and The Architecture Student's Handbook of Professional Practice. He co-authored two books, Managing Project Risk, and Introduction to Health Care Planning, Design and Construction, addressing the real world side of architecture.

Above all, he has written stories of great architects and great projects.

These include Il Duomo, Brunelleschi and the Dome of Santa Maria del Fiore, and Fallingwater, The Story of a Country House, and The Magnificent Gates of Seoul, published in two languages. His research and his attention to detail is unparalleled, and he is just getting started.

Be on the lookout for his next compelling story.
